An RCD could save your life!

I am amazed at how many houses I go into that still do not have a Fixed RCD life-saver fitted. In fact, it is astonishing because it is estimated that 2.5 million people receive a mains electric shock in the UK each year, of which 350 thousand received serious injuries and in some instances it is fatal. And that doesn’t even include the multitude of injuries and deaths caused by electrically started fires… Shocking eh!

Yet, by correctly installing an RCD (Residual Current Device) you can pretty much eradicate the risk of shock or fire!

In simple terms, an RCD detects when there is a fault in your electricity supply and turns it off instantly. Whether it is an appliance overheating, a wire accidently cut or someone coming into contact with the live supply, an RCD could very well save the lives of you and your family.

Why doesn’t everyone have one?

I suppose that is a question we should be asking them. I became a Dad for the first time last year and it does something to your sense of what is important in life. People suffer from two problems when it comes to safety. First is “it won’t happen to me” syndrome, and a close second is “it is too expensive”

Speaking as a Dad I would reply, “What is cost compared to the safety of those dearest to you?” And as an electrician I would simply say, “It probably doesn’t cost as much as you think to keep your home or work place safe.”
