Commercial fit-out — bespoke feature lighting

My trainer's gym. Our best bespoke work.

Gymtro Training Club is one of St Albans’ best-regarded independent gyms. When founder Baba Oluwole — Kyle’s own trainer — turned a disused first-floor office into his flagship facility, KG Electrical delivered the full electrical fit-out, bespoke feature lighting included.

Location

St Albans, Hertfordshire

Property

Converted first-floor office space

Scope

Full electrical fit-out, bespoke feature lighting, external supply

Baba used to train me before Gymtro grew to the point where running the business became the full-time job. When he took on this building I understood exactly what he was trying to create commercially — a premium facility that looked and felt the part from the moment someone walked in. The lighting had to contribute to that from day one.

Context

From office to gym

Gymtro Training Club is one of St Albans’ best regarded independent gyms — founded by Baba Oluwole on a simple premise: proper coaching, small groups, no ego, no nonsense. When Baba took over a disused first-floor office block in St Albans and set about turning it into his flagship facility — a full-size gym, multiple training studios, showers, changing rooms and a co-working lounge — the electrical fit-out was ours.

The building is a former commercial office on the first floor, the ground floor occupied by a separate business. Converting it for gym use meant starting from scratch with the electrical installation: everything the previous tenants had needed was wrong for what Gymtro needed. Power for gym equipment, machines, speakers and Wi-Fi throughout. Power supplies for electric showers in the changing rooms. Lighting in the bathrooms, mirror lights, electric towel rails. External lighting supplies to make the building visible and inviting from the street. And the feature lighting — which is the part worth talking about in detail.

Feature Lighting

Lighting you cannot buy

The weight training area has a black ceiling — deep, flat, dramatic — and Baba wanted the lighting to feel intentional rather than functional. Not spotlights, not panels, not whatever came with the building. Something that suited the premium environment he was building. We designed and built bespoke geometric LED profile lights on site: large rectangles and triangles fabricated from component parts bought from various suppliers, cut to size on site, assembled and installed to fit the exact dimensions and proportions of each space. The profiles are clean white linear LED mounted in custom frames — geometric shapes that sit on that black ceiling as objects as much as fittings. They light the space properly and they look extraordinary. That combination is the whole point.

Building bespoke rather than specifying off-the-shelf is not always the right answer. Here it was the only answer. Nothing available from a catalogue would have filled the space the right way or given Baba the premium finish he needed. The design, the cutting, the assembly and the installation were all done by KG on site. The result is lighting you cannot buy.

The Fit-Out

Less visible, equally important

The rest of the fit-out is less visible but equally important. The main gym floor runs on high-output LED panel lighting — even, flat, functional illumination where shadows from poor lighting placement become a safety issue. Each studio has its own circuit and switching, so classes can run independently with the right conditions for each session. Speakers, Wi-Fi access points and machine power supplies are all fed from circuits planned for the load they’ll actually carry. External lighting on the building draws the eye from the street and marks the entrance clearly — a gym on a first floor, above street level, needs to work harder to be found.

Outcome

How it turned out

Gymtro has grown significantly since opening!

Baba now runs the business full time, and Kyle trains with one of his coaches. The facility reflects exactly what Baba set out to build: a serious, well-equipped space that justifies its premium positioning. The electrical installation reflects the same standard. It works completely, it looks exactly right, and it plays its part in making Gymtro the kind of place members are proud to train in.
