Sopwell House Hotel
Omboo restaurant refit
July 2022
Exclusive electrician since 2019

Director, KG Electrical
Sopwell House is one of Hertfordshire’s most prestigious hotels — a Georgian country house once home to Lord Mountbatten, set in 12 acres on the edge of St Albans. KG Electrical have been the hotel’s exclusive electricians since 2019, working across the property as it continues to invest in its facilities.
In 2022 the hotel made a significant move, transforming its main restaurant into Omboo — a bold Asian-inspired dining concept serving sharing plates from the spice routes of Asia and the Far East. The existing restaurant was stripped back and rebuilt from scratch: new entrance, new layout, a completely new aesthetic. The electrical installation had to follow every decision the designers made.
This was a full electrical refit — not a tidy-up of what was already there. The entrance to the restaurant moved, which meant power and data had to move with it. Every lighting position was new, requiring the existing cabling to be stripped out and rerouted to meet the designer’s specification. Then the supplied fittings — chosen and specified by the interior designer — had to be installed correctly and working perfectly for opening day.
The main dining room has a double-height ceiling crossed by slatted white beams carrying two full rows of adjustable track spotlights — a large number of individually positioned luminaires, all aimed precisely to illuminate the hand-painted botanical wallpaper and the dining tables below without creating glare or flat, even light. The entrance features a cascade of crackled-glass teardrop pendants in brass, hung at varying heights — a statement installation on arrival that required careful positioning and clean, hidden cabling.
The private dining room is a different world entirely — dark timber panelling, trailing floral canopy overhead, and sunburst wall sconces that throw dramatic starburst patterns across the walls. LED cove lighting washes up behind a valance to create a warm ceiling glow. Every zone of the restaurant has its own character, and each required a different approach to get right.
A hotel restaurant refit runs to a hard deadline. Every day the restaurant is closed is revenue lost and guests disappointed. The team worked all hours to ensure the fit-out stayed on programme — the kind of commitment that comes from a long-standing relationship with a client you know well and don’t want to let down.
The entrance, the main dining room and the private dining room — the spaces as they opened.
Omboo opened in July 2022 to strong reviews, quickly becoming one of the most talked-about dining destinations in Hertfordshire. The electrical installation that makes it work — the track lighting, the feature pendants, the private dining atmosphere, the data and power infrastructure — is invisible to the people eating there. That’s exactly as it should be.
If you’re building or renovating and thinking seriously about external lighting — architecture first, fittings second, nothing from a default list.
